What are The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards?
The competition is the oldest and one of the most prestigious student art competitions in the country. Past winners include noted artists such as Red Grooms and Andy Warhol. Winners are eligible for scholarships and cash prizes, and have their work sent to national judging in New York City. National winning work is exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C. Cheekwood and The Tennessee Credit Union have been regional sponsors of the art portion of the competition for nineteen years.
Who Is Eligible?
Students in grades 7-12 may submit exemplary visual artwork, newly created from January 2009 to January 2010. The student must reside in the counties of Cheatham, Davidson, Dickson, Robertson, Rutherford, Sumner, Williamson, or Wilson. Artwork should be pre-juried by the school art teacher.

Tuesday, January 5 - Thursday, January 7 from 10:00am-4:30pm
Friday, January 8 and Saturday, January 9 by appointment only
*Schools with 20 or more entries must make an appointment for drop-off by Monday, December 21st.

Schools should deliver the artwork to the lower level of the Learning Center at Cheekwood, 1200 Forrest Park Drive, Nashville. Cheekwood is located in west Nashville near the Highway 70/100 split.
ADJUDICATION SCHEDULE:
Judging will take place January 12- January 14, 2010.
EXHIBITS & AWARDS:
The Scholastic Art Awards Regional Gold-Key Exhibit will be in the Cheekwood's Museum of Art. The exhibit opens January 31, 2010 and closes Sunday, February 21, 2010. An awards reception for Silver Key and Gold Key winners, their teachers, and families will be held at Cheekwood’s Botanic Hall on Saturday, January 30, 2009. Admission fee is waived that day for participants, their teachers, and their families.

How Do I Enter?
Online Registration for The Scholastic Art Competition begins October 1, 2009.
All interested artists must register online at http://www.artandwriting.org/registration.
Students should discuss their interest in the competition with their school art teacher. Students attending schools that are not participating may enter independently.

Submission Guidelines
Please pay close attention to the submission guidelines outlined below.
ENTRY CATEGORIES:

SIZE LIMITATIONS:
Set by the national office of The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers
• Two-dimensional artwork should not exceed 48 inches in any direction and, in general, the largest 2-D work that is eligible is 36" x 48".
• Three-dimensional artwork should not exceed 18" x 18" x 36" in dimensions and should not exceed 30 pounds in weight. Individual works that exceed the size limitations may be disqualified.
MATTING REQUIREMENTS:
• All 2D flat pieces must be matted in a bright white standard mat. No poster or railroad board will be accepted. Flat 2D artwork will be framed for the Gold Key Award Exhibition by Cheekwood.
• The width of the mat should be no less than 1½ inches on any side. Bevel cut is preferred, but straight cut will also be accepted.
• 2D flat work will only be accepted in the following finished matted sizes: 12x16, 12x18, 16x22, 18x24, 22x28, 24x36.
• Do not mat pieces that will be larger than 24x36 when matted out. Please submit these pieces without a mat. Also, canvases do not need to be matted.
• All pieces must have a backer board for support. Please attach the artwork to the backer board. Cardboard or chip board are both acceptable forms of backer board.
• Please do not cover artwork with acetate or other clear material. If needed, attach temporary cover to artwork with one strip of removable tape. The cover will remain on the piece for protection, but must be removed when judged, photographed, and framed.
Please note: Artwork not adhering to the regional submission guidelines can be submitted to be judged. However, if the piece wins a Gold Key award, it will not be displayed in the Cheekwood exhibition but will be sent to New York for national adjudication.

ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY PORTFOLIOS:
All portfolios must be submitted as digital files on CD-ROM. Students will also preselect and turn in with the portfolio packet one piece for Gold Award exhibition, matted as specified above. This piece is for exhibition only and not individual competition. Review the Portfolio Submission Guidelines in the ‘Regional Guidelines and Deadlines’ section at http://www.artandwriting.org/registration for specific instructions on portfolio entries.

$5.00 per individual entry; $20.00 per portfolio

ENTRY FORMS:
In addition to the individual entry forms for each piece of artwork (provided at the completion of online registration), each school must submit the following inventory forms at the time of check-in:
1 – Teacher/Class Inventory Form: lists each work of art submitted by an individual instructor
2 – School Inventory Form: lists the collective totals from each Teacher/Class Inventory Form from the same school
All Teacher/Class Inventory Forms must be presented with (1) collective School Inventory Form at the time of check-in.
