SUMMER CAMP: 11-15 YEAR OLDS

*These classes are designed for campers ages 11-15. Please contact the Camp Director at 615-353-9827 for questions about enrolling older students. Camps are taught by different instructors with changing lesson plans throughout the summer, so no two camps are alike!  See Camp Descriptions below.

ART & FASHION
- Explore the art of fashion in this stylish class. Campers will learn about fashion design, accessory making, and fashion history. From sketching their own designs to making their own jewelry, this course will introduce campers to the basics of fashion and design while using a variety of materials.

CLAY FUNDAMENTALS - Campers will discover the basics of hand building and throwing on the wheel.  From learning the fundamentals and throwing their own cylinders, bowls, and plates to exploring underglazes and textures – campers will do it all!  No prior experience is necessary.

COMICS & CARTOONS - Give your drawings a comical spin in this camp. Explore concepts and characters to create your own comics and cartoons. Students will learn how to incorporate the basics of drawing into these art forms through storyboards, self-portraits, anime, drawing on-site in Cheekwood’s exhibitions, and more!

DYNAMIC DRAWING - Do you like to draw?  From line and form to texture and shading, this class will explore the basics of drawing and beyond using a variety of different materials and media. Campers will enjoy learning the fundamentals in a fun and active studio.

GARDEN & NATURE EXPLORERS - This unique camp is designed to foster respect and appreciation for the environment and to inspire a sense of wonder through direct experiences with the natural world. Campers will enjoy hands-on activities, insect and plant encounters, nature hikes, outdoor games and craft projects. Our art studios and botanical garden will provide beautiful, spacious areas for learning, play and discovery!

INTERACTIVE SKETCHBOOK - Students will create their own mixed media sketchbook as a document of their personal stories, experiences, and thoughts. Campers will enjoy Cheekwood’s beautiful grounds and express themselves through their artwork. Techniques addressed will be pen and ink drawing, watercolor painting, collage, photo transfer, and drawing on-site at Cheekwood. 

INTERMEDIATE ART - From painting with acrylics or watercolors to sculpting in clay or found objects – campers will learn more advanced lessons in both 2D and 3D art.  This survey of studio arts will help campers explore the potentials of a variety of materials and methods.

INTERNATIONAL ART ADVENTURE - Take a trip around the world in this exciting class!  From Cheekwood’s Japanese Garden to our summer International Playhouses exhibition, campers will expand their knowledge of different cultures & artists while creating works of art and learning foreign language vocabulary. Enjoy a wide variety of art making with unique materials!

*NEW* PLEIN AIR SKETCHING - The art studio moves outdoors in this exciting drawing class. Campers will explore Cheekwood’s grounds while learning drawing fundamentals such as perspective and composition, while taking inspiration from our landscape and exhibitions such as Steve Tobin: Southern Roots and International Playhouses. This class will combine time in the studio in addition to outdoor time.

*NEW* SENSORY DRAWING - Use all five senses in this exploratory drawing class. Campers will take inspiration from sound, smell, taste, and touch, in addition to using their eyes in order to create vibrant drawings using materials such as pencil, pastel, charcoal, and ink.  

*NEW* ZEN ART - Art and yoga collide in this exciting new class! Campers will create their own zen-inspired artwork while learning basic yoga poses in our Japanese Garden and other scenic locations. This camp offers ample outdoor time in addition to exploring media such as drawing and painting in the studios.
