Fabergé & Czarist Russia
Grades: 6-12
Experience exquisite creations from the House of Fabergé while investigating the social and political atmosphere of Russia during the reign of Czars Alexander III and Nicholas II. Students will examine beautiful botanicals, personal items, and three Imperial eggs created especially for the Romanov family by Peter Carl Fabergé, preeminent jeweler to the Imperial Court.
Artists Collect: The Red Grooms and Lysiane Luong Private Collection
October 11 – January 4
Grades: 4-12
This fall, native Nashvillian and nationally recognized artist Red Grooms and his wife Lysiane Luong lend Cheekwood works from their private collection. The exhibition provides a new context in which to understand styles of the modern movement as well as to examine the visual resources that influenced the richness of Red Grooms’ own work. Include a visit to the Exploration Station and step into the studio to help Red and Lysiane complete several works of art.

Michael Oliveri: Innerspace, Permaculture and UFO's

Passing Time: The Art of William Christenberry
March 14 – June 14, 2009
Grades: 6-12
Born in rural Alabama, William Christenberry’s work reveals the “sense of place” reflected in the south of his youth. Through his paintings, drawings, sculptures, constructions, and photographs, Christenberry explores the universal themes of loss and isolation, memory and comfort, and creation and change. Students will examine how his work traces the passing of time and comments on the different interpretations of change.

All Aboard! Take your class on a scenic tour of the state of Tennessee with a trip to Cheekwood! Beginning in April, seven garden-scale trains wind over bridges, under trestles, past waterfalls and through Tennessee’s favorite landmarks. All crafted from natural materials, 3-D replicas include sites such as the Smoky Mountains, Graceland, the Hermitage, Fall Creek Falls, the home of Casey Jones and much more. Highlighting regional history as well as sciences such as engineering and physics, your students will enjoy this enchanting and educational experience.

Artists’ Books from Postwar to Present
April 19 – September 28
Grades: 7-12
What is an artist’s book? This exhibition explores methods artists use to make and publish books, featuring works by artists such as Jasper Johns, Richard Diebenkorn, and Robert Motherwell, among others. Students will compare and contrast fine press, independent press, online publishing, and “zines”. Curriculum connections are endless with this informative look at contemporary techniques for making published material available to the public.
Tennessee Abstract Painters
January 17 – June 14
Grades: 7-12
Inspire your students’ creative potential with this exhibition of abstract painting by Tennessee artists. Students will discuss the evolution of abstraction since the mid-20th century as well as its relevancy for painters working today.

Explore the newest art forms in Cheekwood’s Temporary Contemporary galleries. Students will experience cutting edge installations, videos, sculptures and 2-D work by the best regional and international artists. Song Archive Project
April 19 - September 28, 2008
German artist Yvonne Buchheim presents a video installation featuring footage of Nashvillians singing old world folk songs handed down for generations. Using music, this project suggests one way culture is received and remembered.
Glexis Novoa
July 26 - September 28, 2008
Architecture shapes and defines how humans understand and interact with their environment. In this installation, investigate how Novoa’s drawings on pieces of marble reflect his memories of the colonial architecture and monuments of his native Cuba.
Michael Oliveri
October 11- January 4

Michael Baggarly
January 17 – April 12, 2009
Sculptor and Middle Tennessee State University faculty member Michael Baggarly examines biological structures and machines to comment on the connection between concept and process. Students will learn how this artist searches for a sense of order and understanding as well as how contemporary artists can use physical and phsychological means to inspire dialog.
