September 14 Tennessee Gesneriad Society Flower Show and Sale
Although still most well known for the African Violet, the Gesneriad family has many plants commonly grown as house plants, and others which, while rarely seen, are deserving of more popularity. Many have wonderfully colored leaves, and the delightful, often large and showy flowers are easily encouraged on the deck or inside on a windowsill or under lights. The vast majority of the plants that can be seen when the Tennessee Chapter of The Gesneriad Society (an international society of people who love this family) holds its annual show and sale in Botanic Hall, September 13-14, will have been grown as house plants by folks who have discovered the wonders of this plant family. Most will look very little like the most commonly grown member, the African Violet. In nature, as many grow up in the trees as with roots in the ground, and their adaptations to this wide variety of habitats as well as a wide variety of pollinators provide us with such a diversity of plant and flower that you will swear they are not related.
The sales area will just whet your appetite once you've realized your hunger for these often easy to grow jewels among house plants.
For more information on this family of plants, see The Gesneriad Society’s webpage

September 27 Herb Society of Nashville's annual Herb Day
The Herb Society of Nashville's annual Herb Day features two exciting speakers:
• Katherine Schlosser, Editor of The Herb Society of America’s Essential Guide to Growing and Cooking with Herbs.
• Norma Weinberg of Cambridge MA, Author of Natural Hand Care: Herbal Treatments and Simple Techniques for Healthy Hands and Nails.
Garden related vendors will present interesting and useful products, and artistic members of The Herb Society of Nashville will display samples of their many talents. The cost for the day, which includes a delectable herbal lunch, is $35. In addition, attendees who are not members of Cheekwood will be charged a gate fee of $10 as they enter the grounds, which allows access to the Art Museum and the many gardens and displays on the property.
