VICE PRESIDENT OF DEVELOPMENT AND MARKETING
Postition Overview
Reporting directly to the President/CEO, this person is a member of the leadership team and works closely with Vice President of Finance and Operations and Vice President of Collections and Programs. S/he provides guidance and training for the development and marketing staff and works closely with the Board of Trustees. S/he will be responsible for creating and implementing annual development and marketing plans and overseeing any special campaigns. S/he will thoroughly understand Cheekwood, its mission, vision, culture, potential, programs, key stakeholders, and diverse constituent groups.
Key responsibilities
· Creates an annual comprehensive fundraising plan that includes major gifts, annual giving, individual giving, membership programs, foundation grants, corporate sponsorship and support, planned giving, and special events. Oversee the creation of this plan, its objectives and budget; implements and monitors plan throughout the year.
· Creates an annual marketing plan, including objectives and budget, that includes public relations and paid advertising to increase awareness of Cheekwood among residents of Nashville and tourists to Nashville; implements and monitors plan throughout the year.
· Works closely with Board on issues related to development and marketing and with board led committee chairs.
· Advises and works closely with President/CEO in developing and implementing fund-raising strategies and goals for the institution especially with regard to major gifts. Also advises key staff on development goals and plans.
· Works closely to develop relationships with corporate, foundation, government and other potential funders and constituent groups to provide support for Cheekwood.
· Develops and oversees planned giving and the Cheekwood Legacy Society.
· Oversees membership program by successfully maintaining and renewing current members and developing ways to solicit new members.
· Administrative responsibilities include supervision of development and marketing staff, budgeting, managing donor database, and other administrative functions.
· Oversees all of Cheekwood’s print and media communications and is responsible for maintaining consistency and integrity.
Ideal Experience
- A minimum of 7 to 10 years of senior, professional development experience, including significant experience within a large organization.
- Proven track record in developing and managing comprehensive fundraising programs that incorporate major gifts, annual giving, individual giving, membership programs, foundation grants, corporate sponsorship and support, planned giving, and special events.
- Demonstrated success in planning and execution of capital campaigns including conceptualizing plans and strategies, developing materials, writing cases, evaluating progress and delivering results.
- Demonstrated ability to establish positive relationships with board members, major donors, prospects and volunteers.
- An ability to think creatively about marketing and public relations and how these different programs dovetail with the institution’s development plan and goals.
- Excellent leadership skills and the ability to create a high-performance environment that inspires and motivates, fosters collaboration, and encourages open communication.
- The successful candidate will be an articulate communicator who can develop and deliver a compelling case for financial support for the institution.
- Excellent writing, listening, and verbal communication skills are required.
- S/he must be a team player with a professional attitude and the ability to plan, organize, train, coordinate, monitor and delegate while maintaining effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, and members of the general public.
- CFRE and knowledge of Middle Tennessee philanthropy, art and culture are pluses.
- Bachelor's degree.

Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art is located in Nashville, Tennessee. Originally the private estate of the Cheek family (built between 1929 and 1932), Cheekwood opened as a garden and museum in 1960. Today, Cheekwood operates with an annual operating budget of $6.5 million and over 100 full and part-time staff.
